On October 8, 2026, Google announced the Gemini agent at Gemini at Work. Its official event page positions the product as a common interface for workplace questions, content and coding. Source: Google Cloud Press Corner.
The decision for a business is narrower than whether to adopt an AI coworker. Start by asking which assignment should move from a person's to-do list into a repeatable, reviewable workflow.
What Google described
Google says tasks can continue in the cloud for hours or days. In coworker mode, an agent can receive a separate Workspace account, including email, calendar and Drive, and see the context its team shares. These are vendor-described capabilities, not findings from our own testing. Source: Google's announcement.
Why a role is not an assignment
Our assessment: a team-facing identity is useful only if the work attached to it is clear. Calling an agent a coordinator leaves too much unspecified. Asking it to prepare a draft launch summary from an approved project folder gives the evaluation a concrete object.
For that hypothetical assignment, define the inputs, the output and the reviewer before choosing the implementation. A readable document is not necessarily a correct one. The reviewer should be able to identify unsupported statements, missing updates and conflicts between sources.
A proposed success test could require every important claim to point back to a permitted record, unresolved questions to remain visible, and the draft to arrive without sending messages or changing source files. Those are suggested acceptance criteria, not promised Gemini features.
Keep the product and platform distinct
Google's separate Agent Platform documentation describes low-code Studio, a Managed Agents API and the Agent Development Kit. It also distinguishes platform administration, Gemini Enterprise administration and Workspace administration. That documentation provides implementation context; it does not establish that every platform control is available in the newly announced work experience. Source: Agent Platform documentation.
Before selecting a deployment route, request confirmation of access for your edition, the relevant administrative surface and the terms for the exact workflow. Treat the keynote as an announcement, not proof that a feature is enabled in your tenant.
Evaluate the handoff, not the personality
We suggest comparing reviewed output with the current manual process. Record preparation time, reviewer corrections and total cost for the same assignment. Include the effort needed to maintain source access and update instructions when the project changes.
Expand only when the handoff becomes easier for the human owner. If reviewers must reconstruct the task or repeatedly repair the result, a more impressive agent identity has not solved the operational problem.
The durable takeaway is a procurement question: what completed, accepted work will this system own, and who remains responsible for accepting it?
