Apple’s first November developer notices introduce a new subscription tool and a separate App Store compliance deadline. On November 4, 2026, retention messages became available for subscriptions. A November 2 notice also set out new age-rating declarations arriving later in the month.
Messages inside the cancellation flow
Retention messages let an app show text, an image, or an offer as a subscriber considers cancelling an auto-renewable subscription. Apple says developers can configure subscriber eligibility and the interval between messages in App Store Connect.
A separate Retention Messaging API can choose the message for an individual subscriber based on subscription details. Apple says API access is available by request. The existence of the feature does not mean every app has immediate API access or that a developer should expose sensitive customer information to a new service.
Evaluate the experience as well as retention
Our product analysis is to decide what information helps a subscriber make a clear decision. A useful message can explain a benefit they have not used or offer an appropriate plan. Its price, duration, and renewal terms should be understandable in the context where it appears.
Measure more than whether cancellation was postponed. Support complaints, refunds, and later cancellations can reveal whether the message helped someone find value or merely created friction. Test localized text and images and make sure the result remains legible and accessible.
Age-rating declarations have their own timetable
Starting November 16, App Store Connect adds descriptors for shared real-world location and dating or relationship features. Apple’s definition of the latter includes virtual companions engaging users in romantic or sexual content. Declarations are required when submitting an update or changing the questionnaire; every app must complete them by January 12, 2027.
Apple says dating and relationship features receive a minimum 18+ rating. Location sharing does not change the minimum everywhere, while Brazil has specific A16 and A18 treatment. The notice describes a route for requesting an official Brazilian classification where an app believes it qualifies for a lower rating. Regional treatment should be checked against the current official guidance.
Make one owner responsible for each change
These notices concern different parts of an app business, so they need different acceptance checks. The subscription owner should verify which products, subscribers, and messages are eligible before enabling a retention campaign. The release owner should ensure the rating questionnaire matches actual app behavior, including features supplied through a companion service.
A technical team should not assume that a marketing description captures all rating-relevant behavior. Review what users can actually share and what a conversational feature can do. Record the decision before the next submission, and leave time to resolve regional questions before the universal January deadline.
