Google announced Gemini tools for small-business owners on October 20, 2026, followed by an October 21 Workspace update explaining its Customize hub for apps and skills. The announcements deserve a second look because they bring everyday business work into Gemini, but rollout timing and connection permissions determine what an owner can actually use.
What the business launch includes
Google’s October 20 announcement introduces a business landing page, marketing and finance skills, and connected apps. Named connections include Google Business Profile, Google Ads, Google Workspace, Adobe, Canva, Dropbox, Shopify, Wix, Zoho, and Xero. This is an app-and-workflow update, not a new Gemini model announcement.
Owners can supply brand materials so Gemini retains a visual style for subsequent assets. Google also describes turning spreadsheets, receipts, and purchase records into financial graphics and interactive models. The announcement says these business features begin rolling out globally to all Gemini app users in the coming days; it does not establish universal immediate access.
Customize has a separate rollout clock
The October 21 Workspace post describes one place to manage response skills and connections to more than 40 external services plus Google apps. Skills shape repeated responses, including writing tone and formatting; they should not be mistaken for unrestricted permission to operate business software.
The Customize menu is rolling out globally across web, mobile, Windows, and macOS for all tiers. Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and personal accounts are included. However, most connected apps are initially available in English in the United States, with selected regional expansions. The menu’s global availability does not make every connector globally available.
For Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, Google says the menu’s gradual rollout started October 13, with up to 15 days for visibility. Separately, its October 13 skills notice targets mid-November completion for Gemini app skills and says skills inside Workspace are delayed until further notice. Those are different timelines, not a promise that every skill arrived October 21.
Useful SMB trials—and the boundaries to keep
Practical starting points are deliberately narrow: ask for campaign artwork using approved brand materials, turn a sanitized expense spreadsheet into a chart, or configure a skill that produces customer-response drafts in a consistent format. Treat these as trial workflows, not guarantees of correct accounting or autonomous customer service.
Google’s connected-app help advises checking each connector’s supported and unsupported actions. A listed Shopify or Xero connection is not evidence that Gemini can perform every storefront or bookkeeping operation. Users can review connections and disconnect apps; Workspace administrators also control access to Workspace services.
Keep the data boundary explicit: connect only what the test needs, remove unnecessary customer identifiers, and review outputs before publishing or changing records. Google’s admin guidance says disabling Workspace connections blocks additional retrieval, but earlier chats remain available. Disconnecting access should therefore not be treated as deleting previously shared information.
